There are about 9,200 foreigners residing in Hachioji and about 3,100 foreign students studying at 21 universities in Hachioji. Regarding increasing foreign residents as members of our communities and living together with them as our neighbors, Hachioji City is promoting local internationalization to support foreingers' life, enhance interactions between foreign students/residents and Japanese citizens, and provide necessary information to foreigners.
In July, 2008, Hachioji International Association was established on the 11F of Hachioji Square Building in front of JR Hachioji Station, which holds various multicultural events, Japanese classes and consultation, produces association journal, and supports daily lives and communications of foreign residents.
In addition, Hachioji City concluded friendship agreements with three Asian cities, Tai'an (China), Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and Siheung (South Korea) in the autumn of 2006 and is witnessing active international exchanges between residents.
